His eyes clogged with mud, the toy soldier is no longer fit for service.
He lies on his back, his one leg raised in appeal, the foot severed at the ankle.
The other leg could never be recovered, blown off by a land-mine in the no-man's land of a little boy's garden, buried by the dog.
His clothes and face are caked with earth and greyed, providing no distinguishing features, one of a thousand thousand of his like.
